Am I A Survivor of Childhood Abuse?
How would I know?
The answer is not so much trying to remember but looking at your life now. Ask yourself .....
- Am I in a relationship I'm really happy with?
- Am I unable to get a long lasting relationship?
- Am I treated with equality?
- Are my views respected?
- Am I always talked out of what I would like to do?
- Am I happy always pleasing others?
- Do I suffer a lot of guilt ... particularly if I think of what I would like to do?
- When I think about it I have no idea of what I want
- I easily get put down
- I easily get jealous
- I easily get angry
- I don't really listen to others
- I easily judge others
- I don't like many people
- People often let me down
- I'm not a really good listener
- I wouldn't have a clue if I'm a good listener
- I have a need to act promiscuously
- I have a need to be very flirty
- I change friends easily
- I don't get on with my family
- I'm scared of my parents
- I feel my parents judge me
- My parents live far away and I haven't seen them for years
- My family isn't close
- I get angry or annoyed with my kids easily
- I don't like animals
- I like violent movies
- I like sarcasm
- I like making fun of others - after all it's only kidding!
- I road rage easily
- I hate being late
- I put a lot of pressure on myself
- I'm a perfectionsit
- I'm obsessive
- I have to look good all the time
- I can't 'chill' easily
- I'm not an impulsive type - I have to plan
- I'm always thinking
- I'm always thinking of the past or the future
- I rarely hear my heart beat or notice my breathing
- on and on it goes, some of this seems trivial, most of it feels normal ... but is it?
- could it be better?
Well if your said YES to any of the above then it can be better, without a doubt.
Abuse does not have to be the heavy stuff - really obvious physical, sexual abuse.
Abuse permeates society. Dysfunctional parenting travels from generation to generation.
If you would like to improve the quality of your life, if you would like to say NO to all of the above, there is help and support. The above list took me about 30 seconds to compile because I see it so much in counselling. The list is by no means exhaustive.
